There's a "new" samba scene in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, and one of this scene's foremost exponents is a singer from another neighborhood...
Teresa began singing in Madureira, in the zona norte (away from Ipanema and Copacabana), singing in the pre-1960s style of Monarco and Argemiro Patrocínio, among others. She was taken to Rio's Lapa by (the wonderful) sambista Wilson Moreira, and eventually began performing in a tiny club called Semente.
The "new" scene is in reality a throwback to the original Rio de Janeiro samba scene, pre-electric, pre-synthesizer, pre-crossover dreams. It's built on people playing their instruments, writing and singing songs, and singing the well-written and moving songs of others.
Teresa Cristina and her band are indeed new in all these old senses. She has a number of recordings out now for those who can't make it to Rio to hear her.
