Rosa Passos is a singer, composer, guitar player originally from Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. She was playing piano at 5 years of age, but inspired as a teenager by the soundtrack to "Orfeu Negro" (Black Orpheus) she turned to guitar and began composing. In the '90s she began recording CDs, beginning with compositions of Brazilian greats and then moving to include her own. In 1997 Kenny Rankin recorded two of her songs -- "Verão" as "Those Eyes", and "Outono" as "Stay" -- with Rosa's participation on vocals.
She went to Japan in 1996 to perform with Sadao Watanabe, and they subsequently performed throughout Europe, South America, and the United States. Among other presentations, she played New Orleans in 2001, after which she was invited to record, the result being the CD "Me and My Heart", later released in Brazil as "Eu e Meu Coração". In 2002 she played Lincoln Center in a tribute to Brazilian singer Elis Regina, participating with other Brazilian artists. She returned to the United States later that year to record the CD "Entre Amigos" (Between Friends) with Ron Carter and a group of American musicians.
The following August she was again in the United States to participate in the recording of Yo-Yo Ma's "Obrigado Brazil", going on to tour the world with Yo-Yo and other illustrious musicians who were a part of the project.
In 2004 Sony Classical launched Rosa's "Amorosa" (Loving), Rosa's tribute to João Gilberto's 1977 album "Amoroso", and in 2006 Rosa realized one of her father's dreams by playing Carnegie Hall (the show was in Carnegie's Zankel Hall, generally used for concerts of chamber music). Rosa was back in New York in 2007 to play the Blue Note (6 shows), going on to Boston's Berklee College of Music to give a series of workshops.
Her latest album -- the 16th of her career -- is É Luxo Só, released by the Rio-based label Biscoito Fino. Luxo só é Rosa Passos!
