Oriente Lopez was born in Havana, Cuba in 1962. He began on piano as a child, moved to violin, and then to flute. Although always interested in jazz and popular music, Oriente trained classically for fifteen years in Havana.

Concomitantly, over five years, Afrocuba worked with Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez, producing two double album CDs: "Causas y Azares" in1987 and "Oh, Melancolía" in 1988.
In 1993 Oriente moved to New York City, working as a pianist, flautist, composer, arranger, producer and music director. His collaborations include works with Regina Carter, Paul Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Ralph Irizarry & Timbalaye, Patato, Fito Paez, Mauricio Zottarelli, Charlie Haden, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, among others.
