John Reid (tenor saxophone, clarinet, flute, singer and composer) is a professor at the University of Calgary. He is founder and past chairman of the Calgary International Jazz Festival and founding secretary and past president of the Jazz Calgary society. He's been leading his own quartets since 1974, when he was encouraged by teachers Oscar Peterson and Phil Nimmons to put one together at the first annual Banff Centre Jazz Workshop for a Jazz Radio Canada broadcast.
He's played with Dizzy Gillespie, Paul Horn, and Bob Brookmeyer, and has accompanied Harry Connick Jr., Tom Jones, Lou Rawls, Della Reese, and Kenny Wheeler, among others.
