Germano Mathias learned samba as a kid hanging out with the shoe polishers in São Paulo's Praça da Sé, playing on shoe polish can lids, his primary instrument till today, some seven decades later.
He sings a style called "samba sincopado" (sincopated samba), full of swing and bossa (a term pre-dating bossa nova and meaning something along the lines of swingingly elegant style). His Guarda a Sandália Dela was a national hit, and he's known for his interpretations of the sambas of Caco Velho and Zé Keti, among others.
