Dona Dalva de Cachoeira (Dalva Damiana de Freitas; "Dona" is "Lady", a term of respect used in Brazil for women as their girlhood trails into the distance), born in 1927, is a Bahian gem.
From the age of 14 she worked rolling cigars, and in 1961 she organized her fellow workers into a group singing samba-de-roda. She's still singing.
She was awarded in 2012 an honorary doctorate from the Federal University of the Recôncavo of Bahia, in Cachoeira.
