Dianthe "Dee" Spencer is a musician and educator. She's Professor of Music at San Francisco State University (where she founded the jazz studies undergraduate degree program).
Dr. Spencer has performed with Clark Terry, Branford Marsalis, John Handy, Jimmy Scott, Louis Bellson, Greg Osby, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Regina Carter, and LEDISI. She's been a featured performer at jazz festivals in Beijing, Cork, Dresden and Tasmania, and has recorded with Tower of Power vocalist Lenny Williams and with Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (Aretha Franklin's favorite drummer).
She was musical director/conductor for the TheaterWorks production of RAISIN', and was a performer and adjudicator/clinician at Walt Disney World's 2010 Jazz Celebration.
Dr. Spencer spent time on the piano faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston. She directed the Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowship Award combo for the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts (NFAA), the GRAMMY All-Star National High School Jazz Combo, and the SFJAZZ All-Star High School Ensemble (this ensemble competed at the Essentially Ellington Competition for Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2002 and 2003).
She served on the governing boards of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) and the SF Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS).
Her CD "Vintage School" was released in 2002, "vintage" in the title referring to compositions rooted in New Orleans, the Duke Ellington Orchestra...
