The name "Carolina Chocolate Drops" is a reference/tribute to the Tennessee Chocolate Drops, a black string-band active in the 1920s and 30s, members (of the Carolina version) being Dom Flemons on 4-string banjo, guitar, jug, harmonica, kazoo, snare drum, bones, and quills; Rhiannon Giddens on 5-string banjo, fiddle, and kazoo; and Hubby Jenkins on guitar, 5-string banjo, guitar, and bones.
Much of the group's repertoire is based on the traditional folk music of the Piedmont region of North and South Carolina, learned from African-American old-time fiddler Joe Thompson...but the group's music ranges widely and another part of their repertoire is comprised of their own compositions, while yet another comes from other places and times.
